Crocheters and knitters are welcome to participate in this
project. Specific pattern instructions are available and a specific type and
brand of yarn are used to create soft, warm shawls and lap robes. Our group has
done a wonderful job! Pastor Barbara has given shawls to several people in the
congregation and a few have been sold. Baby blankets and booties were given to
the parents of the two new babies in the church family. There is lots of yarn in
the church office for anyone who is ready to make another shawl. I took the
display down from the narthex and plan to put it up again when the weather gets
colder. We have 9 shawls without fringe, 7 with fringe, and 2 lap robes in stock
in the office. They are available for sale if anyone wants to buy one for a
friend.
I have a new project for all of you who knit and/or crochet. It is a simple pattern to make a baby cap for the Save the Children organization. Two million newborns die each year in the first 24 hours of life in the developing countries of the world. Preventing the biggest killers—infections, complications at birth, and low birth weight doesn’t have to be expensive. It could mean antibiotics to fight infection or a knit cap to keep an underweight baby warm. So Save the Children is asking volunteers to knit or crochet a cap for a newborn baby by January, 2006. The group is hoping for 75,000 caps and a letter to President Bush urging more aid for health programs in the developing countries of the world. Each baby cap takes only 3/4 ounce of yarn and can be quickly made. I will have patterns and yarn available for you in the church office. I think that everyone who enjoys knitting and crocheting will really enjoy doing this new project, especially knowing that they are giving to a newborn who might not otherwise have a chance. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (612) 866-0189. Thank you in advance for your help and caring.

VEAP
Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People
Volunteers Enlisted to
Assist People (VEAP) was founded in 1973 when thirteen churches in Richfield
came together to help those experiencing hardships. Today, VEAP serves
Bloomington, Edina, Richfield and part of Minneapolis. VEAP’s professional staff
coordinates a neighbor helping neighbor program that relies on donations and
volunteer services to strengthen the community as a whole. The organization
provides clients with food, emergency financial assistance, transportation,
holiday gifts, and school supplies. The various programs work together to help
address the multiple issues that can occur in low-income households.
The Church of Peace supports VEAP through it's food shelf and, it's back to school
programs, both monetarily and with other gifts.
